Right.

The processes that don't add together to increase noise (variance) are the ones starting from photon emission to the photoelectron being captured in the storage well.  And because the yield from each step is less than one, the variance goes down because the number of photoelectrons in the storage well is less than the number of photons emitted from the blackbody.

Read noise does add in and does increase the total variance.   Sorry if that was confusing.  I should have been more clear I guess.
