I am being offered the Series 1 500/4.0 IS brand new with 1 year warranty.

Is the older lens worth it in light of the availability of the $10,500 Series 2 500/4.0 IS?

These are the main difference between the two.

Series 1: $7,500
Series 2: $10,500

Year of Release
Series 1: 1999
Series 2: 2012

Closest Focusing Distance
Series 1: 4.5m
Series 2: 3.7m

Series 1: 3,870g
Series 2: 3,190g

Stops of Image Stabilization
Series 1: 2 Stops
Series 2: 4 Stops

Interesting...I am also in a similar situation deciding if i should get the mark1 version of the lens. It's a used lens so its about 25% cheaper but without warranty.

I don't have a huge need for wildlife/bird photography at the moment but intend to do so. For a bit more money I could get a 300L IS mk2 so it's a tricky situation for me here.
