Best MILC for Shooting Figure Skating?

Picking Canon just because I know it more than the Nikon equivalents (there won't be much difference in price), the minimum I'd be looking at for what you describe would be:

  • Canon 70-200 f/2.8 - Amazon says $1299
  • Canon 7D - Amazon says $1279

You could possibly try a combo like

  • Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 - Amazon says $769
  • Canon 60D - Amazon says $799

but I'd be worried about the focusing abilities of both the body and the lens - the lack of HSM/USM or equivalent on the lens is particularly worrying.

But those Canons are rather noisy in low light and therefore not going to deliver all that good results although the 7d could track and focus in that venue with the right lens.  That Tamron is completely wrong.  It is incapable of tracking motion.  It is horribly slow AF.  Although for non-sports it has very pleasing colors, good contrast and really pleasant bokeh.
