One rule of thumb - the smaller the group, the more dramatic your lighting can/could be, however, the larger the group the flatter your light needs to be (to minimize risk of cross lighting & shadows covering faces).  With your main "on camera axis", if all eyes can see the camera, no shadow will be hiding a face.

With only two lights, you may need to use light #2 as a background / separation light source.
