Why not just go with an Open Source solution instead?

If you want Dropbox style features for syncing and sharing, you can install OwnCloud for that purpose. See some of it's features here:

You only need to pay the 39 bucks if you want the Dropbox like feature of syncing. And how much processor speed do you need for transferring files?

ownCloud is on my list of things to try this winter when I'm bored but I am not technically challenged.

ownCloud might not be the best do it yourself solution for the technically challenged but it is an option.
