No one has mentioned this yet, but something similar is happening with the duck in the background at top. Most of the beak is transparent, sort of a solarized look.

Short of quantum entanglement or a side effect from the LHC, or dark matter bending light, I'd say it has something to do with movement of the duck. The camera cannot invent blades of grass behind the head it can't see. Also there's a fainter eye below the eye suggesting head movement.
