How can you determine the correct exposure settings on a film camera?

I am new to photography and I am now learning how to use the manual mode on my Nikon N80 film slr. The challenge is that unlike a DSLR, I cannot see whether or not the pictures have been exposed properly.

What should I do to learn how to set the f-stop, iso, and etc. accordingly without wasting a lot of film?

How do I apply the Sunny 16 Rule?

Also, do I need a light meter to do this?

Any advice about this would be appreciated.
