Isn't there a risk in cleaning...

... that unless you adopt NASA cleanroom conditions, the sensor can become permanently scratched eg by an errant piece of grit?

I would think there is a risk, and the more often you need to clean the sensor, the more likely it will be that it will end up scratched. I wonder if there's been any instances of this happening?

BTW I mean 'sensor' in the broadest sense, whether it be a the sensor itself or any component immediately in front of it eg an IR filter.
