Hello, and many thanks for these really useful replies, this is most helpful for me to learn, thanks!

Claude - that does look a lot better. I have always resisted moving the black and white points in levels too far into the histogram, as was always lead to believe that losing information in this way is not the done thing. But possibly this is the purist point of view, and creatively it does look better to me, thanks.

Paul - thanks for this offer, I have posted the colour version below.

Allen - thanks for these efforts I really like this version but I haven't heard of these applications - what is PSPX5, and the effects you refer to (Topaz, etc)? I think perhaps I dont have this software, but apologies for my ignorance as I mentioned earlier I have not been formally taught in photography or image processing so I am trying to learn everything myself through books and the internet - so thank you all for this advice it is invaluable!
