I must say I like my 18-200 VRII.  It seems to get knocked for image quality, but honestly, it seems good to me. I've taken what I believe are some very sharp images within it.  Granted, I'm no pro, and do not make money with my camera. I've been struggling with buying a mid range zoom that is "sharper", but I'm struggling to justify it.  For general photography of the family, it is 100% fine for me.  And for me, you can't beat the convenience of the focal range.  I think you'd be happy with the lens.

It's a little heavy, and that is one reason I've been looking for the mid range zoom that is lighter, but honestly, it's not that heavy, and I'm used to it.
