I have the 70-200 2.8II IS, and I love the picture quality.  I use it with a 7D, and my only complaint is that I don't always get good focus in low light.  I think it's partly my fault, and partly the fault of the 7D when off-center focus spots are used.

I did recently use it at a wedding reception, with 1/40 second, wide-open, 1000 ISO.  When I timed the shots right, where the subject wasn't moving, I got wonderful shots.  Not totally sharp with pixel-peeping, but very good.  The focus was generally good -- got about 70% working correctly.

For outdoors, I don't think you will really need the extra aperture, unless you really want the bokeh.  The lens has great bokeh!
