Thank you very much for your suggestion.

I looked up amazon just now for this model and i find 15-85 USM IS for $659

I also found another lens Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, which is $431.

Sorry.. am a newbie in this area and would need your advise about identifying the difference between these lens. The 2nd one which i put up is much cheaper but its less on wide end and has more reach till 135mm. Since both are USM IS, the autofocus is at same speed / sharpness is same on both lens? Please advise.

I basically want to shoot people and want to have higher sharpness and quick auto focus system.

+1 to choosing the EF-S 15-85 over the EF 28-135. The 28-135 is less expensive because it is a relatively old design (1998) with 1st gen IS, and the zoom range is not so well suited to APS-C sized EOS cameras.

The 28-135 range is great on 35mm film and 'full frame' DSLRs, but on 1100D/650D/60D/7D it is "35mm equivalent" to 45-216.

For crop cameras, my choice rankings are:

  1. EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
  2. EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (greater tele range, sharp, STM only marginally slower AF than ring-USM, much preferred over the original non-STM version)
  3. EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM (the "mk I" of the 15-85, good, but not as good )
  4. Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

Thank you for your advise. This is interesting... I remember reading at some blog that 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM suits only Digic 5 processor which is on Canon T4i. They had also mentioned it would not even suit Canon 60D.

With respect to 15-85, does it fulfill my needs of people photography. Am also looking at capturing 5-6 people at a distance of 20feet.
