So, based on one report of a bent camera base, with no photos and no clear evidence on how this happened, people are going to worry? That seems completely reasonable to me.

That's the problem with lack of evidence. it promotes worry. If it were clear and unequivocal we would know what to do and do it. Hopefully there will be more info to come. My feeling is that to create this kind of damage you would have to drop the camera and break its fall with the strap, that way there would be no sign of impact damage.
