But the plate may distribute the stress beyond the threads of the socket. It isn't so much the actual load, but the concentration of the load in a small area.

I don't think it would help because the L-plate attachement to the camera is still to the tripod mount. The plate is just a rigid intermediate. But the pressure is still to the very same part of the camera and would be the very same.
