I agree with you that the D3200's sensor is better than the raw numbers (DxO Mark) seem to imply. I have checked colors and detail at base ISO and I like its output a little better than the D7000's or D5100's. With ACR I see some nice very fine detail in the D3200's image (feathers, for example), that is lost on D5100's and D7000's. Nothing that would make for a big difference in practice, but it's there:

You can see alos that it's a little better in that respect than the Nex 7 (see green area, there's some "posterization/blocking" there, which is absent from D600 and D3200.

If one looks at the color patches, one can see similar effects, color "blocking", meaning a whole patch looking flat, no color texture. D3200 seems at least as good as D600 here.

My guess the D5200's sensor is an update of the D3200's sensor, not of NEX7's, whoch may mean Nikon is getting ready to increase use of its own designs.
