I have the 17-40 and it's a great travel lens, especially if you like taking pics of architecture and landscapes. For a general purpose lens, not sure it's the best choice.

For a good all round lens on a budget, the under-appreciated Canon 28-135 IS is a decent choice. Large focal range, focuses fast, stabilizer, good enough image quality and very inexpensive especially used. I own several L lenses but often take this one if I need a one lens solution for the day.

The 85/1.8 is a great lens portrait shooting, and great bang for the buck.

Thanks for the great info. I am leaning toward the 85mm F1.8 or 100mm F2.0
