I can say with certainty that the top plate is a magnesium alloy, and not brass. It is therefore not plated, like older cameras were, but painted. Most likely, an etch primer was used, to get better bonding onto the magnesium. These are typically either a mustard yellow or a darkish green, at least the ones that Dupont markets in the states. But this will not "brass" like your older cameras. The paint will wear or chip away, so that the change from silver to underlaying metal will be abrupt. I doubt that there is black paint under the silver, but this is just an educated guess.

Since people are just getting their X-E1s now, you may have to wait for a definitive "well I just really dropped mine" report.
