I'm in the market for a mid-range zoom for my Canon t4i. I don't have plans to move to full frame anytime soon, nor do I expect to have the budget for it. My current leading candidate is the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 ($500) with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS ($1048) as my 2nd option. I like the IS of the Canon and it would be a no brainer for me if it weren't for all of the dust problems I've read about.

Does anyone have an opinion they'd like to share? Does anyone have anything else I should consider (and why I should consider them)?

My current gear:

  • Canon 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 STM
  • Canon 55-250
  • Canon 28mm (I have a bad copy and will probably replace with Sigma 30mm)
  • Plan to also purchase Canon 50mm f/1.4 soon as well
  • Canon Speedlite 430 EX II flash

I have the 15-85mm. I do mostly landscape type shots and find the 15mm end incredibly useful. But at 85mm, it has a good reach too. It's nice and sharp, and has IS. I'm glad to have it. But of course it won't give you f2.8, which I don't miss for landscapes. If I need a wider aperture, I stick on my marvellous little 50mm f1.8.
