I have just bought the new Nikon V1 kit with Nikkor 10-30 lens.

As it does not have built in flash I am thinking if I really need to get SB-N5.

I always had cameras with flash and was never quite satisfied with the result (flat images with harsh shadows) so I tried to avoid using them.

From your experience, is SB-N5 more flexible and useful in real life photography?

Especially I am interested if you use it outdoors as fill in flash.

Will appreciate your advice.

Thank you,

I borrowed a co-workers SB-N5 flash to try it out before buying one. My impression if that if works very well for fill flash outdoors, but I found it is too weak for indoor bounce flash off the ceiling unless you use high ISOs. I feel the much more powerful SB-N7 would be a better choice for an all around flash for the V1/V2,, especially for bounce flash indoors. Unfortunately the N7 is larger and heavier than the N5 though.

I won't buy the N7; it doesn't swivel, just tilts, meaning you lose bounce capability off of ceiling in portrait orientation. Given the design of the N5, it's a glaring oversight.
