Thanks for all info.

If i want to move up from the £35 rokkor 50mm 1.7 to a slightly better legacy lens, of maybe £80, what would you recommend?

Trawling round junk shops and charity shops I could have bought about 20 old fast 50mm lenses. All very cheap, some better than others! Canon/Nikon lenses probably pretty safe, but plenty of other options. I quite like my Canon FD 50mm f1.4 (I got it for £10, but that was on a particularly lucky day)

On the other hand, if you want to buy a basic but classic manual aperture lens, that would also double as a very useable standard auto-focus lens on a full frame Nikon DSLR like the new D600, the Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens is available for around £80 brand new, and give you plenty of mileage.
