after installing KDE on linuxmint and trying digikam, etc. I am back to lightroom and windows 7 unfortunately.

Give us a run down. What did you find lacking? What version of KDE and of digiKam does Mint have. On PCLinuxOS we are currently running KDE 4.5.2 and digiKam 1.5.0.

latest is, I am back in linux (crunchbang) and enjoying it thoroughly.  I use gthumb for viewing and sending it to gimp 2.8.2 for close editing.

Plus, just got Kodak Z990 which takes superb pictures, haven't played around with raw yet.
