Re: Reality Check Needed?! Sigma 50-500 OS vs 500 f/4

I'd miss my 500f4 terribly also, and am finding it getting too heavy to lug on long hikes. I switch over to my 300 2.8 more than I used to. On really long hikes I take my old 300f4IS which is a great smaller lens. I also was considering the 400f5.6 for hikes.

I jumped to the 500f4 after 6 months with a sigma 150-500 which was soft at 450mm, and was now wondering if the newer 50-500 OS was any better. I heard it was, but I'm chicken to go there.

One thought here, with such great processing and less noise in the cameras, if you can find a decent downgrade I think you can make up for some of your quality losses.

I did love the sigma colors and it did fine up to 300mm. And I really enjoyed the zoom. f6.3 does however make for a dark lens in low light, but again, newer cameras can make up for that with good ISO.

Hope you can borrow or rent one before you buy. And hoping you have good results! Other than that, I may sell a bunch of my lenses and buy one of the new 500f4 or 200-400, depending on their weight. And the 100-400 f5.6 has been on my mind too for a zoom.
