I tried using the back button focusing for bird and wildlife photography but gave it up after a while. My main reason for not using it all the time is that I do a lot of cold weather photography, sometimes in temperatures well below zero F.  When shooting at -15, I tend to wear rather heavy gloves and can't accurately and consistently push the small buttons on the back of the camera, so I need to use the larger shutter button.  I found that switching which button focuses between winter and summer shooting led to missing some shots while I tried to remember which button to use. If I were doing the great majority of shooting in warmer temperatures, I would probably be using the back button all the time.
