There are no buttons, knobs or levers on the adaptor (see photo) so short of drilling the damn thing off, I've no idea what to do next.

Do you have another one ( unattached ) so we can see the machined surface that mates up with the K-mount?   That will speak volumes as to what is going on.   Perhaps a link to a similar image from the vendor?

I've had K-mount lenses stuck on cheap extension tubes / rings with the lens rotated by 120 degrees.  The size of the three blades on the is lightly different and would prevent the lens from being removed.   It was a { expletive deleted } to get it undone.
