I just got my D600 today and tried a few DX lens that I own and saw this strange behavior on one of my old DX lenses (AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED). This was a stock lens that came with my old D70s.

Why didn't I see this same behavior (dark around the edges) with my other DX lenses, i.e. my Nikkor 50mm F1.8 prime lens?

I have the following settings in the camera menu:

Auto DX Crop = Off

Choose Image Area = DX

1. You have one DX lens, the 18-70mm. The other two are FX.

2. The viewfinder shows the dark barrel with 18-70mm because the camere was not set to DX crop mode and you saw the smaller image circle drawn by the DX lens.

!!! When the camera is properly set to DX mode than in the viewfinder you must see a masked  (painted dark shadow) area around the cropped portion. If you don't see this, your camera is still in FX mode.

Good luck.
