Its good to see there are still people who tinker.

For my time lapse stuff I took a slightly different route.   Any battery will produce a reduced voltage as it gets colder.   You just need that voltage to exceed the 5 volts.   I use a DC-DC converter, so no matter ho cold the source battery gets, its still enough to power the regulator.

I use this same rig for my Fuji cameras ( I have a 5.0 vdc and 8.3 vdc version with appropriate plugs ) my blog post is about a version for the Pentax, as it has a strange alien plug.   So as long as your battery is capable of sourcing > 5 volts ( like a 12 volt battery ) it could be -40 out and still work.
