and just get a legacy 50mm and an $18.00 set of extension rings?

It's certainly possible to get great results with a legacy lens and extension tubes, especially if the lens is a legacy macro lens. However, the one small thing that drives me nuts about legacy lenses is that when you stop them down, the display dims.

When close-up and macro shooting with my old Canon FD 50mm f/3.5 macro lens, I usually found it necessary to focus with the aperture wide open, then stop the lens down (being very careful not to move the focus ring or the camera/tripod when adjusting the aperture!), then take the shot. More than once I found myself taking a photo, then realizing that I had forgotten to stop the lens down.

I just bought the Olympus 60mm macro lens. It's a bit of an extravagance for me, considering that macro and close-ups are a small part of what I shoot, but I find it worth it for the in-camera aperture control alone. Autofocus is just a bonus.
