I must be lucky, my copy is excellent in the studio for portrait work (on a par with my canon 24-105L) mostly used at f8 though. Its also excellent for macro and close up work.

Not a great landscape lens but capable of good results in good light at f8 -10

Obviously not up to the quality of the 45f1.8 or 60 f2.8 but, as the kit lens, you wouldn't expect it to be.

Its down to what you want to use if for really.
