Re: Silent mode?

The 1ds3 silent mode is basically this:

When you push the shutter release, the mirror flips up and the shutter opens and closes.  But the mirror stays up as long as you hold down the shutter release.  The mirror only flips back down when you take your finger off the button.

It isn't as quiet or quick as the quiet shutter on the 5d3, and it isn't as quiet as the live-view shutter on the cameras you mentioned, but it is still useful.  Of course it is better than having to use live-view to make the shutter quiet, because you still can use the view finder and have phase detection AF that is actually useful when shooting things besides paintings in a museum.  It just breaks up the mirror flipping sound and it does help make things quieter.
