I get the Err 01 code on my 5D with the 24-105mm lens
attached to it. The shutter locks up, and I have to turn the
camera off then on to clear it. This is listed as a communication
error between the camera and the lens. The 5D works just
fine with my other lenses. I cleaned the contacts on both
the 5D and the 24-105 mm lens with rubbing alcohol, without
success. Since I am currently in India, sending the lens in
to Canon Service in America is not an option.

I am going to put in an order for a new 5D. My question is,
will the old 24-105mm work with the new 5D or do I need to
purchase a new copy of the lens?

It is probably the aperture controller ribbon cable in the lens; a very common problem with the 24-105 unfortunately. It requires a full tear-down of the lens so should only be entrusted to a reputable repairer. The good news is that the high volume of failures means that the cost of repair is coming down as entreprenuers move in!. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CANON-EF-24-105mm-L-LENS-REPAIR-/160903252068?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item257694c864

Might be a bit dodgy but Canon would charge 3-4 times this price at least.
