Speaking of shooting in a nightclub, I have just found out that I can turn the flash's... flash... and focus camera assisted by the flash's infra-red beam - haven't tried it yet though.

Extremely useful feature. Use it.

I also know about lowering EC on the camera to compensate for possible flash blowout.

I would think you'd want to lower that setting on the flash rather than the camera, especially if you're using auto flash settings.

And I keep my flash in manual mode for control.

Your choice, but I'd suggest experimenting with using the camera on manual and flash in auto  modes with a lowered flash EC setting. Camera SS around 1/4 to 1/15th sec and aperture on the 'open' side, depending on ISO.

I want to try using a CTO gel to see what happens to the skin.

Full CTO will make the skin too orange. Try a 1/8th or 1/4 CTO or CTS. Or a light pink gel.

I am going to set my custom WB for flash.

I also know about rear-sync but haven't really given it a try yet either. Excited about it!

Try it, but I can't see it making much difference in a nightclub.
