Hi,

You are trying to get the fundamentals nailed - good idea. See DH's intro here;

and follow through.

IMO leave 'EV' out of the discussion at least initially. Also anytime 'metering' is mentioned, whether flash, ambient, in-cam or handheld, try to be clear if they are talking about reflective metering or incident metering. (Sekonic's site is useful if you need clarity on that.)
