For night time focusing, it's hard to beat a manual focus lens, the hard part is finding one that's corrected for coma and astigmatism, which is what turns pin point star light into blobs.

Shots like the one you linked to are typically done in steps, one or 2 exposures for the Earthly subjects, then 10-20 short exposures at high ISO of the sky to minimize star trails, which are aligned and combined then joined to the Earth shots in a composite.
