Collin, I own both versions, and each has it's own advantages:

  • Type I - Much better built. All metal lens mount. Faster at both ends. Better color rendition. Better background blur. Balances nicely with larger bodies (E-x, E-xx)
  • Type II - Much smaller and lighter. Actually a bit sharper. As you said, focuses a bit closer. Better suited for smaller bodies (E-4xx, E-5xx, E-6xx)

As cheap as these lenses are, I would never give either one up.

Everyone makes nice lenses when it comes to their high priced premium models, but ONLY Olympus makes nice lenses in every price range. Even the cheapest standard grade Olympus lenses are still pretty darn good.
