Well, the best of my own iPhone "snaps" look good to my eyes on a 25-inch monitor as desktop and that usually translates into paper versions of at least the same size - although backlighting on a screen vs paper is about the same as slide v. print and sometimes a lot is lost.

Still, I don't know why iPhone and other similar products do not allow RAW images, and also there is no reason why one could not have an app that gives one lots of knobs to adjust.  The image sensors or systems-on-a-chip (SOC) have a zillion programmable settings that the phone processor just sets by itself.  These could be opened up to users, I think, without a lot of effort.  Next time I talk to the Apple camera guys or Samsung camera guys I will ask them about this, although I am sure it is not a technology issue.
