I don't want to repeat myself, but my story may help someone to make up his mind.

I do use the hood and the filter. One time I dropped my 70-200 which was in a pouch. The filter took the blow, it was shattered, but my lens survived without any damage. Another time while in China cute lama spat on my lens, couldn't clean it, I had to literally wash the filter when I got back to a hotel. And about 6 weeks ago  my dog licked my lens when I was trying to take a close shot of him. Unfortunately he had a grain of sand on his tongue leaving nice scratch on the surface of the filter. I simply replaced the filter not a front element of my lens. That just my experience.
