I used the Tamron 70-200 2.8 and a monopod. The camera was either set to AF-S spot focus in the centre or AF-C zone focus in the middle depending on the moment. Those little birds are pretty fidgety and hope amongst the branches very quickly.

Most of the time I was left with 14-16 megs after cropping into a square. I usually didn't lose much more than the third-8 megs-required to go from 3:2 to 1:1.
