I guess it's a YMMV thing

I happen to regard the entire full grip (battery with the portrait) portion part of the camera. I don't criticize the feel without it so much as to say that for ME the full on kit makes for a perfect fit in my hands, and adds the wonderful utility of the added buttons for access to my most used feature set. I frankly NEVER remove it. I don't care about keeping 2 batteries IN the camera. I have NO issues changing batteries when needed (which so far I haven't run into. It takes all of about 5 seconds and I don't do anything shooting style wise that requires more of me. It is solid as a rock once mounted unlike so many grips and other camera bodies I've used. I love it's design as it isn't so typical of other camera's designs. I applaud the unique nature of the OMD's design. It is just perfect for my medium hands.
