I really wish Nikon would bring a 24-70 f/4 to market with "pro grade" optics.

I wish for a 24-85/4G instead.

I have both, D800 & 24-120 f/4. It's a very sharp combo. I would challenge anyone to tell the difference of an image taken with it at f/8 (OP stated use as a walk around lens), vs either the 70-200 or 24-70, at 70mm. Don't trust online "samples" they are generally not even 2 mp.

At 70mm it is fine, I agree. But at 85mm and 120mm it really isn't. I also own all of them (24-70, 70-200, 24-120) at one point. At 85/120mm it is only good until the 1.2x crop border. Even at f/8 or f/11 the borders are all blurred, and I had tried two different copies of the 24-120.

For a D800/E user, unless you love the 85-120mm range at f/4 for portraits (which isn't bad), or are satisfied with the limit of a 25mp 1.2x crop in the same range, the question is why even bother to carry all that extra weight for the 85-120mm range.

That's probably just me, I wish Nikon had instead made a 24-85mm (or 24-100mm) f/4G VR with nano-coating that's sharp corner to corner on the D800/E, for a bit less money and a bit less weight. What's really disappointing here is a I bet many folks know Nikon could have done much better with this lens, instead of a half-hearted "no threat to the f/2.8 line" effort.
