I suspect that the 32-bit app is hitting that 2Gb limit because of the save operation ( possibly the compression ). Remember that it may need to construct an intermediate internal version of the data to save it, so it's not simply the image in memory, but an additional version in a different format that has to be built before it can be saved.

Perhaps. Yet on my old XP machine, PS CS3 never once had a problem with giant PSD files of more than 1GB in size.
