A lot of good advice here. Here's my 2 cents.

One thing to also consider especial indoors is White Balance it is best to use a custom White Balance or at least the incandescence setting with normal household lighting  If yo do this you will notice a big difference in the nature and amount of the visible noise in the image and the exposure looks more natural also.
