Hey Wint. Wow, of all Nikon FX DSLRs, you probably couldn't have come up with a worse combination of camera and lens for sports. The D600 has the weakest AF and the 85mm f/1.8 AF-S is a great great lens, but it certainly isn't known for having a fast AF.

This really isn't the case.  The D600 AF is excellent - only found to be a shade behind the top performing AF in the D4 or D800.  The 85 1.8G is not a great sports lens but it's completely usable.  I have used the 85 1.4D for sports - slower AF yet capable if you're smart about it.

To the OP, obvious question but you didn't mention it - were you using AF-C?

Unfortunately I haven't used my D600/85 1.8 yet for sports so I can't share my experience or offer any advice jsut yet.  FWIW, I would be shooting outdoors with a 70-200 2.8 for sports and save the 85 1.8 when absolutely necessary in terrible light.  In those circumstances you're happy to get the shot and a little missed AF is not terrible.

One thing I would suggest is single point AF and see how that goes first.
