I agree about not wanting to be tied to an application. After years of cataloging with an application it can suddenly go out of favor and no longer be supported, then what? I wish there were a standard for cataloging so applications could share data, but that isn't going to happen any time soon. Fortunately, key words (tags) are universal and allow fairly complex searching provided one is careful to add them.

Some people dump all photos into one big repository with little to no classification by folder. I use a hybrid system that tries to organize folders by person or event and date (usually by event) so manual file browsing is simple and fast. I also use keywords to facilitate later searching. Keyword searching will find things regardless of where they are, and even a Windows file browser can search by keywords.
