Philip, if you don't allow Win7 to setup the dual boot, you won't be able to get in to XP.  If you're asking if it's possible to entirely delete the XP partition if you decide that you don't need it any longer, I believe the answer is yes.  I believe that the procedure that Richard referenced (from the Macrium website) will allow you to do that.  I'm pretty sure that the WinPE disk can create a new boot loader.  If you delete the XP partition, all you would need to do is to make the Win7 partition the Active (and primary) partition, boot from the WinPE disk (possibly the Win7 disk also) and let it rebuild the boot loader.  Win 7 should then boot normally as a single OS (no boot selector).
