Getting the X100 just for the lens

Hi,

I own the XPro-1 and the 35mm and 60mm lenses. I couldn't be happier with this current set-up with the one exception that I want to be able to go wider on occasion. I'm not a fan of the super wide look at all and would really never see a need for it. I was patiently waiting for the 23mm 1.4 to come out in early 2013 to round out my kit.

I'm not sure if this is just my sub-conscious trying to convince me to buy another camera, but the thought of getting the X100 just for the ability to have a 23mm wide view is appealing. I'm sure that the 23mm 1.4 is going to be pretty expensive, and so for similar amount of money I could pick up the X100 instead..

.....is this just crazy talk?

It is your subconscious doing exactly that, BUT, that doesn't make it a bad idea. You'll love the X100.

Get the X100 now and get the lens later. Who knows when they will announce it and when we will actually see it. The X100 will more than make you happy in the meantime. I say this because I've read a lot of your posts on the XP1 and as an XP1 owner that has been carrying an X100 for a little less than a week now, I can tell you that you will not only love it, but keep and use it even after you buy the lens for your XP1.

Yes, it is. But that doesn't change the fact that it feels good. Do it!

haha.. Common man, your supposed to talk me off this ledge and instead your encouraging me to jump! :-)

I own the X100, bought the X-Pro 1 and thought I'd sell the X100 and stick with one camera.

However, once I picked up the X-Pro 1, I immediately knew that I would be keeping the X100. The X100 is smaller than the upcoming 23 mm f/1.4. ;)

lol. Can't help you there. I personally think your want is 100% legitimate. JUMP!!!

Almost a no-brainer. The X100 is a relative bargain nowadays - especially a good used body.

Even if you decide to buy the f1.4 at a later date - you have the X100 either as a backup camera or a trade-in/bargaining tool in it's purchase.

What's to lose ....?

Haha you may end up leaving your Xpro at home more than once. The X100 is just so nice to grab a go out and shoot.

You have a point why spend so much for a lens when you can have for a little more a whole camera.

I've been considering a smaller - go everywhere camera for years but didn't want to sacrifice quality.

Now that I can get one of these with an APS-C sensor, think it time and you can pick one up new on ebay for $900 delivered.

Happy birthday to me!

What about getting the 18mm and using that along with the 35mm to hold you over. Then when the 23mm comes out you can keep or sell the 18mm depending on how you feel at that time

Peronally, I would love the 14, 23, 35, and 55 prime but I guess I will start out with the kit 18-55and see how it goes

Heh heh heh! I just did exactly the same thing at the weekend, using the same reasoning! The 23mm will be $700, so paying a bit extra for the X100 is a bargain.

I also saw a few rumours that the X100 is being discontinued and I decided that I couldn't miss out on such a classic camera.

My new X100 should be here tomorrow....Although I still have to confess to the girlfriend that I now own yet another camera!

I think where your logic falls down is with the fact that your X-Pro1 withe the 23 will likely produce much better looking images. I vote wait for early next year

It depends on how you look at it. Getting just the lens means you only pay once. Cameras get replaced every 3 years or so as better electronics and features become available but a good lens will outlast several generations of cameras. And some of those classic lenses are now being fitted on Xpro-1 bodies.

Food for thought.

This is my issue. I'm set on the 23mm and really tempted by the X100. However with the new X-E1 and the upcoming 23mm I really feel that I can get better results and have the benefit of using an technologically superior camera. Although, I'm really only interested in the 23mm length so going with the interchangeable system is a bonus, but not completely necessary.

Granted the form factor of the X100 will undoubtedly be smaller than the X-E1 which does account for something. I'd jump on an "X200" in a heartbeat with an updated sensor and faster AF focus.

Decisions decisions...

FYI: I rented a xpro1, loved it but wanted to wait to hold the XE1 and compare BUT I checked out a x100 while waiting 6 weeks ago- bought it and love it.... i've said it before on DPReview that the x100 has a soul and the fixed lens/body is a great combination. I will either get a XE1 or XP1 when the xe1 hits the store but ill keep the x100 and TBH it has made me not care when the XE1 hits the shelves. So maybe I will be crazy too????
