badly scratched drop in polarizer gives surprising results

my polarizer for my 200 f2 VR Nikkor suffered a severe scratch when it accidentally fell during a lens change

taken against a white foam board with light angled

I learned that fixing it would be difficult & considered getting a new one, but these aren't cheap

I then used it for some bird shots (with a 1.7 TC attached) and was surprised to see how little this affected IQ given that the scratch was directly in the center of the filter

much larger version here along with EXIF & some others using this combination

perhaps I would have seen more of an effect had I stopped down more, but I don't shoot this lens stopped down much & will be using this polarizer more now
