X100 viewfinder playback oddity

Sometimes when I shoot in the OVF, the playback of the photo I just took seems normal, like it fills up the viewfinder and there it is. Other times with the OVF, it shows the playback photo, but I can see out the OVF on the outside of the photo at the top of the viewfinder. Does that make any sense? I wouldn't have noticed this if it wasn't inconsistent.

So basically, sometimes the playback is of the photo I just took and around the edge of the photo is all black and everything looks normal.

Other times it isn't black around the edge and I can see out the OVF at the top of the the frame where it is supposed to be all black.
