Nikon never needed an f4 70-200 lens because classic Nikon had the 80-200f2.8, no difference in cost, little in weight and size, in fact, no competition, well it was AFD not AFS/VR. However that lens cost the same or less than the Canon IS USM f4, whereas today's modern 2.8s cost 80% more than the older AFS/AFD f2.8 designs and are heavier, so now an f4 at 80% less cost with less weight makes sense.

Yep, f2.8 is still a big difference, just compare with f3.5 let alone f4 or ask Canon.
