I have a paid account with smugmug. It allows for customization, better image protection, and allows me to apply sharpening settings for the photos I upload.

Do I really need a paid accout? Probably not, but it's a $5/month indulgence I allow myself.

$5/month? You can get good photo hosting for half that price at zenfolio.

Unlimited is $60 per year at Zenfolio, that is $5 a month. If all you need is basic, might as well use Picasa for free.

Unless you are uploading photos for automated sales through large prints, there's no need for unlimited file space. Web viewing is 800 pixels on the long side. And secondly I don't want to use google services or products, they are too large and catalog and store too much web data for my tastes.

800 on the long side was a really long time ago. The day I wake up scared of Google is the day I die.
