Tagging people in photos

I've been using Picasa for photo organizing and touch up.  I recently purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements for more control of the post processing.  I'm fairly satisfied with Picasa's photo organizer, but elements has a pretty decent looking one as well.  One difference I've seen between them is the way they handle the tagging of people.  Elements treats a person's name as a tag and is written to the metadata as a tag.  Picasa stores the people information in a separate database.

I'm not sure which is better.  The way Picasa does it seems better because it keeps people and tags separate.  However, the people information is not available to other software.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?
